Based on the comprehensive assessment of a monument in honor of a woman in early Imperial Lycia, who adopted the gymnasiarchia, this paper discusses the epigraphic evidence of the overall few contemporary female gymnasiarchoi. It argues that similarities in the biography of these women reveal when and why gymnasiarchia became an attractive means for rich and ambitious women to display social prestige.
