The conference will deal with major technological innovations in glass-production, beginning from its unknown beginnings in the Bronze Age until the development of glass-blowing in the Roman Age. The workshop will address not only the technological aspects of the production of vitreous materials and glass, but also their social relevance: What did ancient glass mean for its users? How was it incorporated in everyday life? Did glass possess non-practical (e.g.: magical or apotropaic) characteristics – and if yes, why?
