How did the repair and reuse of materials impact the ancient economy? And what did the ancients consider as trash? This paper examines the function of recycling and discarding within the Roman economy, with an emphasis on Egypt and attention to the larger Mediterranean. It examines papyrus documents that mention these practices and brings them in conversation with archaeological remains that further illustrate and problematize them.
