Roman funerary depictions used music and musicians as a kind of tool to indicate the wealth, social status and political status of the deceased person. This paper gives an overview of this phenomenon by analyzing Republican, Imperial and Late Roman examples. The aim is to present the role of musicians and the meaning which Romans attached to them, according to the themes chosen for funerary monuments.
