ANTIKE Architektur im Blick / Eyes on ancient architecture
Forty Years of Architectural Research at the Division of Building Archaeology, Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, Berlin
Urania Berlin, October 16 – November 7, 2013
For forty years, architects at the Division of Building Archaeology, Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, Berlin have conducted research into historical architecture excavated as a result of archaeological investigations throughout the world. Documentary drawings and reconstructions created in cooperation with drafters, graphic artists and CAD designers exhibit a high degree of artistic refinement in addition to their research value. The selection of works presented at the exhibition focuses primarily on antiquity, with many of the materials were displayed publicly for the first time. The drawings and models also provided insight into how new measurement and visualization methods have changed the way we view ancient architecture. The question how these methods have transformed the way archaeological sites are presented was one of the topics being explored by Topoi research project (C 3-4) Ruins and space. A brief history of dealings with archaeological excavation sites.
The exhibition also included 3D models and a film presented at Topoi’s 2012 exhibition “Beyond the Horizon” that depict the development of the imperial palace on the Palatine hill.
A series of lectures accompanied the exhibition.
