The aim of Sven Greinke’s doctoral research was to investigate the literary concepts of the late antique text corpus of the XII Panegyrici Latini based on the question “mit welchen literarischen Konzepten die Autoren die Kaiser als Adressaten ihrer Schriften in den Vordergrund rücken”. The thesis has broadened its focus not on a kind of “direct” praise of the emperor, but on a canon of categories (nature, social interaction, the presence of the emperor, etc.) which are used by the panegyrists as a tool of praising their emperors. To broaden the perspective of the Gallo-Roman corpus, more Latin and Greek fonts are used. Text-immanent structures and connections between the texts were studied and interpreted in terms of their effect.
The dissertation was successfully completed in 2014.
