Abstract

As part of a research project Reiterkrieger – Burgenbauer: die frühen Ungarn und das ‘Deutsche Reich’ vom 9. bis zum 11. Jahrhundert (Knight warriors – Castle builders: The early Hungarians and the ‘German empire’ from the 9th to the 11th century) early Hungarian silver finds dating to the 10th century from graves found at Szeged-Kiskundorozsma were analysed by Micro-X-ray fluorescence for their silver alloy compositions. By comparing the coins from grave 100 and the jewellery from grave 595 we investigated whether the coins could have had the appropriate composition to produce the silver fittings found on site without further alloying procedures. The majority of the coins was clearly different from the silver fittings, with the exception of one coin issued by Hugh of Provence which had a composition very similar to three of the analysed artefacts; such coins could have served as the material used to produce the silver ornaments.
